Hey guys! Recently I've been writing a fanfiction and I've onl posted it on one other website. I would like some immediate feedback though so I came here to post it. The story follows the plot of the actually video game only through the perspective of my own original character, Bane.
Chapter I
I looked up from my book to the screen of my computer, still opened to some Pokemon fan base that I still had no interest in. All the kids in town had some sort of account and I had somehow been bribed into making one myself. I didn't really see a point in fretting over stupid little creatures. I rolled my eyes as someone message my account. I glanced down at the book in my lap, the dark blue cover rubbing my leg as I dog-eared the page and closed it. It was a book about adventure, but it was also my own little journal that I kept around my person.
I gave a deep sigh and closed it, setting into the messenger bag at the foot of my bed and getting up to check out the computer. It was mostly just stupid instructions for 'beginner adventurers!' I gave a dark chuckle. I didn't know why people thought running off into the world was a good idea, and with some dangerous pet at that.
The screen was filled with white text of rules and manuals. I glanced out of the window in my room. Most of the kids in town had left long ago back in autumn. It was spring now and the only kids left were me and my friend Crow. He wasn't really my friend per say rather than just someone I was obligated to hang out with seeing as there was no one else. I turned my head back to my bed where my bag sat. My father had gotten it for my on my tenth birthday, his head fully set on sending me out on my own journey. But...
Things were different now.
I scowled grumpily and stared into the olive green paint that covered my walls. The paint had been there since I was an infant since m parents didn't want to know what my gender was until I was born. My bed was a salmon color which I hated. I had nothing against the color pink but I hated fish. End of story.
There was a salmon colored dresser next to the bed and a white long table against the wall decorated with books, pictures, and other miscellaneous items. A faint smirk tickle my lips and I gave a scoff before shutting down the PC and grabbing my bag. I need some air.
Upon entering the living room I saw my own mother. She had dark silver eyes and light caramel hair unlike my own pitch black. Although our eyes were the same dark grey. I was about the same height as her if not a bit taller now. I smiled naturally and she returned the favor lovingly, but it seemed she had more to say.
"Hey honey, I came to talk to you about something very important. Do you remember Professor Juniper?"
My eyes instantly narrowed and I crossed my long arms over my chest. Yes I did remember her, but I didn't necessarily want to. The Pokemon professor was one of my mom's high school friends as well as my father's. I gave a curt nod, suspicious of what she had to tell me.
"Well she gave me a call just a few moments ago and she proposed the most brilliant idea. Um, Bane; do you want to have Pokemon?"
My suspicion turned into a deep scowl and I groaned audibly. We had been over the topic multiple times prior and usually I always won, resulting in no Pokemon. I never really liked them ever since my father had passed away. They always brought bad memories and anxiety attacks for me.
But something about my mother now seems different than the other times she mentioned Pokemon.
"No. We've been over this before." I stated matter of factly.
She rolled her eyes and spoke again. "I know. But I'll ask you again." Did I just hear her growl at me?
I raised a eyebrow at her and confirmed my suspicions as another low rumble escaped her. I grimaced. Was she serious? She knew how I felt about being around Pokemon and how uncomfortable it made me. But maybe this time around she was finally fed up with me and my complaints.
"Yes?" I whimpered. Wait...whimpered?! Since when did I ever submit to her?! But before I could take back my answer she clapped her hands together, grinning from ear to ear and cheering.
"Step one cleared! Well then, do you know what a Pokedex is?" I gave another nod.
She smiled and continued on, "So you want one right?"
There it was again. That growl.
"I don't have much of choice here." I retorted in a rather tired tone. My mother smirked at me as if she was proud that she had finally won me over. She clapped her hands again and turned her back towards me, "Then your course is set. There is a girl named Bianca out in the town. She is Juniper's assistant and you have to go and find her. She wears a large green hat, so look for that."
She winked at me over her shoulder and I groaned silently, adjusting the bag on my shoulder before pushing the door open. I knew I should have stayed in bed.

Aspertia City wasn't big, but it wasn't small either. It was big enough to accommodate a lot of people. The Pokemon in town were common and there was never anything rare around aside from maybe the mareep in the neighboring town. There were lakes and rivers all around the town including a small lake beside my house.
I lived in one of the few houses in the city while other just lived in a two story apartment. I looked around for the woman with the green hat but I saw nothing that resembled a hat. Walking down the street I caught the sight of my friend Crow. He was a little odd if you asked me. He had jet black hair with a hint of blue that was absolutely horrific, going in every which way as if a Tangela had decided to nest atop his head. He had a beautiful set of amber eyes that I secretly envied to my own fishy grey ones. We could have been brothers actually aside from a few things. We both had dark hair and were about the same height. We both were fair skinned without any blemishes, but that hair...
I shook my head and looked to the small girl beside him, Raven, gripping his hand as if it was the only thing keeping her grounded. Raven was dressed in a lavender sundress with a darker ribbon tied around the bust and a pair of black sandals. She had the same black hair as her brother but instead of unruly, hers was curly and neat. Her eyes were green, taking after her mother in pretty much every aspect of appearance. She was sweet and it almost made me wish I had a little sister sometimes. Almost.
"Bane!" I gave a small wave and a nod to acknowledge him. He ran up to me with his sister in tow, coiling his arm around my shoulders and grinning. I tried not to scowl and smiled gently, squirming slightly under his touch.
"Where are you goin?" He asked, releasing his sibling and stepping away from me.
"My mom is forcing me to go see some chick and get a Pokemon." Crow nodded and I could literally see a spark of amusement in his eyes. He grinned and struck a pose, "Well it's about time you got a Pokemon. I've had one myself but I've been waiting for you." Guilt struck me as he said this. I never asked anyone to wait for me, but I guess in some way I was...grateful? Although I would never say it aloud, I did value Crow as my friend.
"Yeah. So, do you know where I can find this girl?" I tilted my head and looked at him but he looked about as informative as a Snorlax. He shook his head and I instantly began to push past him and walked down the road.
I heard him whisper something to his sister along with her echoing steps. I glanced over my shoulder as I walked and saw him jogging along.
"I might as well help you." I shrugged. It wasn't as if I could stop him anyways and maybe he would find her before I did and actually prove to be useful.
We searched for about an hour or so before Crow gave up and just started following me. I looked around the city. She probably wasn't from here so I tried to think of a place where tourists usually went.
The Lookout.
I grabbed Crow's hand and sped off towards the outlook, him giving a bit of protest as I gripped his wrist. When we arrived at the stairs he shot me a look as if to say, 'good idea'. I nodded and jogged up the stairs.
The outlook was a pretty popular place for both visitors and civilians. You could see the entire route including a large lake. During the winter it was especially beautiful. Since it was spring the air was moist and warm, there were flowers sprouting all over and petals danced in the breeze as I looked out at the scenery. I glanced over and instantly knew that I had found the girl.
"It's sooooo pretty!"
I jumped and snapped my head to look at her as she marveled at it. She had short hair that was a light blonde and a large green hat sat on top. She had olive green eyes and wore some sort of orange outfit that matched her hat.
She suddenly turned towards me, "Don't you agree?!"
I raised an eyebrow at her but nodded slowly. Her eyes gleamed with a sort of innocence.
"Oh! By the way, my name is Bianca! I'm the assistant of Professor Juniper and I'm looking for a person named Bane, do you know him?"
Ah. So this was her. It was humorous too since she was talking to Bane, aka me. Of course I had to be a smart ass.
"No I don't actually. He sounds familiar, wanna take a message." I heard Crow begin to laugh somewhere behind me and frowned slightly. I turned to glare at him and he suddenly burst into a fit of laughter. I sighed and smacked my palm against my forehead.
"Oh! You're Bane!" She smiled, realizing her fault. I nodded, smiling slightly. Turning to look at her I dug my hands into my jean pockets, "Bane Vespertilio, pleasure to meet you, Bianca."
Her happiness seemed to grow and she grabbed my hand, shaking it vigorously. "Nice to meet you too! But I wanna ask you, do you want to help us complete the Pokedex?" She asked me with pleading eyes. I nodded. If I didn't say yes my mother would surely pound me. She nodded, her face brightening. She stopped talking all of sudden, staring off into space. I peered closer, what had happened? I waved my hand in front of her.
"Um, so do I get a Pokemon?" She blinked, acting surprised as if she had forgotten why she was here
"Yes! Here, choose the Pokemon you want to have as your partner."
She took out a small glass case in which contained 3 small pokeballs, all exactly identical. I picked up the third one and pressed the button, red light spilling out and revealing a small white and blue creature. It was holding a small seashell in its hands, I tilted my head and it just stared at me numbly. It sat down and I watched it as it just began to sharpen its little shell. Well, that was boring.
I shook my head, recalling the little otter thing and picking up the middle ball. I did the same thing to it and out popped a small orange pig. It gave a squeal and I somehow found myself breathing rapidly. It gave a snort and little embers came out of its nose. I cringed, a twinge of fear lighting my grey eyes, I began to hyperventilate. Realizing what was happening, Bianca quickly recaptured the Tepig and handed me the last one. I gave a sigh, what if I wasn't meant to have a Pokemon? Would Crow really leave me behind? I grasped the last ball, silently praying that this one would appeal to both me and the Pokemon. I nervously pressed the button and there before me was a small snake-like creature. It blinked and shook its head, looking up at me tiredly. I looked back at its dark chocolate eyes, slightly admiring its calmness. It sniffed me once before widening its eyes and narrowing its eyes at me. I narrowed my own eyes and glared at it, having some sort of staring contest I guess. I gave a small growl and it looked surprised. It nodded at me and stepped closer, sitting down and looking up at Bianca expectantly.
I grinned and followed suite to the small Pokemon.
"This one." I claimed, my eyes gleaming with excitement.
Bianca smiled and gave a sigh of- happiness? Relief? She clapped her hands and began to drill me about the one I chose.
"This is Snivy, it's a grass type and is actually quite cunning. Lucky you this one is a female which is quite rare amongst starters. Now, you do have the option to name it..." She trailed off, waiting for my answer.
I tapped my chin. A name? I'd never really named anything except for a few stuffed animals when I was small. I gave it a few moments before I thought of the perfect name.
"Nix."
Chapter II
After I received Nix, Bianca followed up with giving me a Pokedex. I held the small device in my hand, I knew how to use it since my dad used to always teach me about Pokemon and technology and stuff like that. I slipped it into my bag just in time to see Crow run up to greet us. He had the biggest grin on his face as he gripped my hand with friendly fierceness that I knew only he could possess.
"Can I have a Pokedex too Bianca?!" I silently sighed, I sort of knew that he would want one too if I had received one prior him. We were partners after all, well, according to him. The blonde girl looked taken aback for a moment, but she quickly recovered and smiled back.
"Of course! The Pokemon population in Unova is an ever-growing wonder, so the more the merrier!" She reached into her purse and pulled out another and I silently wondered if she kept a bunch on her just to hand out like Halloween candy. Kind of creepy.
"Now although it saddens me to have to go, I must leave to attend to the lab. I'll see you both another time." She giggled childishly and waved at us as she scampered off to Arceus knows where.
I rolled my eyes and turned towards Crow. He took out a small pokeball and pressed the button to where another small pig jumped out. I flinched but willed myself to calm down. Crow smiled sympathetically and pet the small Pokemon. "This is my Tepig, I've raised him ever since he hatched from an egg." I tried to relax my breathing, taking deep breaths like I was taught. I smiled gently and looked back at Nix who looked back at me curiously.
Crow grinned and pointed at me, "Now that you are an official trainer, it's time to have your first official battle!" He commanded. I raised an eyebrow at him, he must be kidding. I had just gotten this thing less than five minutes ago and he he expects me to know his to use it. I pulled out the Pokedex, perhaps this thing will help. I pointed t at Nix and it soon was filled with information about the Snivy. It showed me an entire move list and it's special abilities as well as personality and stats. I was actually quite impressed. Looking up I saw both Crow and his Tepig in a ready position. I looked at Nix who seemed to be less than interested.
"Um, tackle." I commanded weakly, pointing at our opponents. The Snivy looked at me, 'are you kidding?' it seemed to scream at me. But much to my surprise it listened, tensing up before lunging out and throwing itself at the orange pig who yelped as it gave away to Nix's weight. I cheered, blushing brightly as I realized how out of character I was. Crow smiled at me and cheered as well, "Tepig, use tackle as well!" He called in which his Pokemon followed through, copying what Nix had done only towards my Pokemon. Snivy tensed, getting toppled back as it took the hit. I didn't really know what to do at this point. "U-Use leer!" I had no idea what I was doing, but Nix sure did. But, I'm pretty sure that I said leer and not tackle again. Because that's what she did.
I saw Crow laugh and glared at him, but when Nix pounded his Tepig into the ground he shut up instantly. His partner gave a groan before collapsing to the ground. Nix skipped back to my side and I was more than confused that she had taken it upon herself to go against me like that. He clicked my tongue and looked back at Crow who was fretting over his partner. I walked over, dropping to my knees to examine the damage.
"It isn't that bad Crow, stop crying and we can take t to the Pokemon center." I said slightly annoyed at his childish actions. He wasn't crying, but he was pouting sourly about his loss. "Sorry man," he said quietly, "It's my first battle so I didn't expect to win." I laughed, withdrawing Nix back into the pokeball. "Guess that makes two of us."
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Surprisingly the Aspertia City Pokemon Center wasn't run by Nurse Joy, but one of the residents, Nurse Fern. She had the same outfit as the other nurses, but she had a light mint green hair and honey colored eyes. She was in her mid 20's and already had a kid who occasionally helped out in the Center.
We walked in, greeted by the common elevator music that always played. I found the tune rather depressing actually, it was annoying and the television shows always played it to the point where I contemplated killing the TV. But my mind was to far elsewhere to really loathe the music taste.
We walked up to the counter where the nurse smiled and asked for our Pokeballs. We didn't see the point of going one at a time so we went all at once. It took maybe ten minutes for Crow's Tepig to be fully healed and Nix only about 3. I sat beside Crow in one of the small tables that was placed in a small corner where they sold food for both Pokemon and people. I looked up at him to see he looked a bit depressed.
"Look, I'm sorry about beating yo-"
"No that's not it." He cut me off, waving a hand at me, staring down at his other hand. I shrugged, "Then what is it? If you and I are going to be rivals of whatever, the. I want you to actually enjoy it, not forced like me." I said with a slight annoyance. I didn't mean to be so snarky and snappish, it was just my outer personality. I did actually care about things despite what people might say. He looked up and smiled at me; he knew. Me and Crow had been friends ever since we were toddlers. I say I'm obligated to hang out with him since out parents were friends as children, but I'm only making excuses. I had always been a loner in school and not many people knew me like Crow did.
"I don't know," he started, "I guess I'm nervous? It's the first time we'll actually be leaving our parents. I actually fought with my dad over it last night. He said I was only a kid and that the world was a scary place. Maybe he's right..." Well it certainly wasn't a lie.
"Your dad is right, but whatever the case may be, you have your partner and me. You are bound to make friends, your outgoing and honest and everything I'm not." I gave a chuckle and slapped his arm. He narrowed his hazel eyes at me and I shrugged.
Footsteps made us look up to see the nurse walking over with two Pokeballs in her hands. She handed them over while explaining the damage and whatnot. Luckily, the Pokemon Center was free when it came to healing since neither of us had much money. I pressed the button and out popped Nix, who looked somewhat pissed. She glared at me and I just stared, she saddled up to me and pinched my arm.
"Hey!" I scolded, pinching her back which seemed to only piss her off more. She began to hit me with her small beige arms and eventually I noticed that she had more limbs. Looking at her, I saw she had grown vines. Nix gave a growl, looking back at her vines with as much surprise as I had. "Looks like I'm not useless after all." I growled back at her. She gave a snort before jumping into my lap and curling up.
I glanced up to see Crow stifling his own laughter. I scowled at him and stood up, pushing Nix off and walking out with the little snake in tow. I was ready to get this over with, not prolong it. I sighed and looked down at Nix who seemed just as interested in this journey as I was.
I glanced behind me to see Crow walking out with his Pokemon. "Sorry Bane, I didn't mean to laugh. But anyways, I'm going to hit the road, I'll see you in the next town or so! Maybe then I'll beat you!" He challenged, a fiery gleam in his eyes. I nodded, waving him away and calling out to him as he left the town.
Now…
I turned away from the road and made my way back to my house, if I was going on a journey I would need some supplies. I made it to my house in about 10 minutes.
My house was very quaint and warm like any cliche tables home. It had a dark brown roof and beige walls with a small porch out front. We had a small garden off to the side of the house that was on top of a small cliff that hung over the lake. I went inside with the stealth of a Ninjask, my senses heightened as I listened for my mother's presence. If she saw me she'd instantly push me back out.
I ran into my room, throwing open my bag and shoveling clothes into it. I didn't bother being neat since it would get disheveled again later. I threw some toiletries into it along with a jacket and a camera. He liked to take pictures and it would satisfy his mother to a degree where she wouldn't call him 24/7. He smirked and looked at Nix, pointing at her and poising the camera, "Cheese." The Snivy smirked and struck a pose followed by a flash of light as I took the picture. He waited for the picture to come out and started to cool it off. It was one of those old cameras since I didn't like all the new technology.
I handed the picture to Nix and she scampered off somewhere with it. I rolled my eyes and hefted the bag onto my shoulders as I made my way to the kitchen downstairs. I opened up the cabinets and started to pack cans of food and small nonperishables. I poured some Debbie cakes into it too since I had quite the sweet tooth. I began to wonder how I would sustain myself with how much money I had, or lack thereof.
Satisfied with my packing job, I started for the door, calling quietly for Nix. What I wasn't expecting to find was my mother standing at the door with a box. I backed up, looking down to see Nix standing beside her.
"Traitor." I hissed and the small snake only giggled. I saw she still clutch onto the picture and I glanced back at my mom. "What do you want? I only came back to pack some things."
"I only wanted to see you off is all, and I got you a parting gift." She handed me the box with a smile. I opened the box to see a brand new pair of red converse. I smirked and hugged her which she gladly returned. "I'll miss you Bane of my existence." I rolled my eyes at her stupid nickname.
"Well I'll make sure to call." I say trying to ease out the door with Nix. Apparently she got the message and waved goodbye.
I walked out of the door and started towards the next town. On my way down the street I saw Raven dart out of nowhere and stop me.
"Bane! Wait I need you to take something!"
She handed my a small bag and inside it had two small maps. "Why are there two?" She smiled and patted my hand, "One of them is for Crow silly! He ran off so fast he forgot his map, so please take it to him, Bane."
I nodded, putting the maps into my bag and smiling at her, ruffling her black haired head. "Taken care of, I'll see you around."
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
I'd made it out to Route 19 after a few moments and was on my way. I saw Bianca a few times but was successful in avoiding her eyes. Its not that I didn't like her rather that I just didn't want to have any disturbances. Walking along I made my way through the grass and eventually found myself at the end. Surprisingly, no one stopped me like 'twas described on the forums. Was I doing something wrong? I came to step when the dirt road turned into stone. I could see the buildings of Floccessy just ahead over the checkpoint building; they weren't much better than Aspertia's, they weren't apartments anymore at least. I looked around me to see the few trees and a large cliff just above me. I looked up further, curiosity tickling the back of my mind as I began to ponder about what might be hiding up there. That's when I saw the figure, it was chubby and a bit tall, maybe a few inches taller than me. The sun was glaring down making the figure nothing more than a dark silhouette against the cerulean sky. I watched it with sudden interest, who was that? I stared at for a few seconds before I began to wonder why it was getting bigger.
Then I realized it was falling.....on me..
"Fox-Dung!"
I collapsed to the ground as the body hit me with a tremendous force. I felt the air in my lungs rush out of me, my head smacking against the dirt road. My vision started to blur and I could see black spots, but I knew better than to succumb to unconsciousness or risk never waking up. I forced the weight off of me fighting for air. The thing on top of me got up and I could sort of hear it apologizing. I glanced up at a large blurry red person with hair almost as bad as Crow's. I felt a pair of strong hands on my shoulders and suddenly I was on my feet.
"Oh Arceus what have I done! Are you alright sonny?"
I nodded and looked up at someone I didn't recognize; they had thick red hair and chocolate brown eyes and a tan complexion. He had a chubby face and thick eyebrows but judging by his strong grip on me I knew he was more than capable to knock a few heads.
"I-I think so." I put a hand to my forehead where I felt moisture. The persons eyebrows furrowed and I sighed.
"Nothing serious, just a bit shock more than anything.
"Well, let me get you something for that, let's head to the Pokemon Center. Nurse Joy will know what to do I'm sure."
I felt a small snout press against my calf and I remembered Nix. I turned to look at a slightly worried Snivy, her eyes narrowed at the burly man but simultaneously watching me. I shook my head and offered a smirk before turning ahead to see the center looking above me.
I don't remember much afterwards; a lot of apologies, bandages, scolding, gentle touches. I can't tell how long I was in there, maybe an hour tops. But when I was coherent enough I was able to see my assaulter. His name was Alder, the region's champion. Apparently he was being careless when he jumped off a cliff(?) and had accidentally fallen on me. I had a sore bump on my forehead and a headache as a result but otherwise no harm done.
"Listen kid, I really am sorry. Maybe I can repay you in some way?" Alder smiled warmly but also worriedly.
"No sir, I'd feel bad if I accepted something, beside it was partially my fault as well for not moving." But it seemed the odds weren't in my favor.
"Nonsense. I got it! I'll train you! I saw your Snivy and it seemed you to don't get slog all that well. I can help." He argued, looking at Nix who wasn't paying any attention whatsoever to anyone but a small bowl of fruit in the lobby.
"Yeah. Um, sure I guess that'll be fine. I have no idea what I should be doing with my life right now anyways. Maybe you can help me with that too."
"By the way, you never mentioned your name.."
"Bane Vespertillio."
And so that's how I became Alder's a'underling' or so he called me.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Later that day he agreed to show me around Floccessy Town. There wasn't much to see around town beside the friendly townspeople of which I made a few acquaintances. Alder bought me a few things like Pokeballs, Potions, and a few status healing things to which I vainly protested.
"Now Bane, what I want you to do is go out to the ranch and see what you can do there. There some possible teammates there as well as some new friends. The couple there will surely have something for you to do." I nodded quietly, adjusting the strap of my bag. Nix stood at my side as she listened to her knew assignment. She knew that these exercises were to strengthen our bond, but would she take it?
She looked up at me before snorting and turning to the doors, walking out with a swish of her tail. I chuckled and followed after her, waving at Alder as I did.
